The legends of the American Southwestern world, along with man's relationship and reactions to his natural habitat and to his universe are set into this compelling poetry of Phillips Kloss. Kloss considered this volume to be "a religious essence of his country and his humanity with the kiva theme, the man theme and the verbality theme consistent throughout." * * * * * PHILLIPS KLOSS was born in Webster Groves, Missouri in 1902. He moved to New Mexico in 1916 where he worked on his brother's ranch, later graduating from the University of California at Berkeley in 1925. Once a reporter for the "San Francisco Bulletin," he married the artist/etcher Alice Geneva Glasier (Gene Kloss) and moved to Taos, New Mexico in 1927. He is also the author of "North Star," "Rainbow Obsidian," "The Stronghold," and "The Taos Crescent," all from Sunstone Press. GENE KLOSS is considered to be among the best etchers in the world. Her faithful record of the spirit and ceremony of the Pueblo Indian is valued not only by collectors, but also by anthropologists who use her work to verify costume and dance. Art critic Alfred Frankenstein stated: "She is both poet and virtuoso, but the virtuosity is always kept subordinate to the poetic ideal." Her book, "Gene Kloss Etchings," was also published by Sunstone Press.
