Mel Thane's troubles begin when he tries to hustle a ride out of L.A. for Phoenix. A little man named Wilson is looking for a driver, and they hook up. But Wilson isn't really going to Phoenix. He only needs a driver as a patsy in case he's caught trying to escape from his partners. Wilson is part of a blackmailing ring. And when Wilson's getaway fails, Mel finds himself in possession of a cryptic file of victims, a bunch of scandalous photos... and $2500 in cash.

Mel decides to invest the cash in a new house so he has someplace to lie low while he figures out just what he's sitting on. That's when he meets Angel, who might be one of the blackmail victims-or maybe she's working a con of her own.
