Sprengel Prize 2025 Sven-Julien Kanclerski: Cat. Sprengel Museum Hannover

The travel and research grants that are integral to the SPRENGEL PRIZE consistently open new artistic perspectives on various regions of Europe. Sven-Julien Kanclerski, following the recent reorientation of the SPRENGEL PRIZE, is the first artist to direct his attention to Eastern Europe and explore Romania from his artistic point of view. Venturing far beyond the conventional tourist sites, he develops his personal approach, which interestingly reveals a distinct artistic profile as well as creating a detailed atmospheric image. It is about secondary locations, peculiarities on the margins that no one really sees and no one actually wants to see, but they all reveal the gaze of the sculptor, who recognizes forms and essential correspondences everywhere, identifies bizarre formal similarities in completely different objects and, in doing so, repeatedly uncovers in a rather touching way traces of human activity in the seemingly incidental.
