Sailing Through Shadows follows the emotional journey of Jeff Gibson, a man deeply affected by the loss of his wife, Karen, who died in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. Six months after her death, Jeff decides to revisit the places they loved, starting with St. Bart in the Caribbean. While there, he encounters a young girl named Gabriella LeGrasse, who is struggling to start the motor of her dingy. Jeff helps her and ends up meeting her family, including her uncle Giovanni, her aunt Carmelina, and her mother Alexandra, who is still mourning the loss of her husband.

Jeff becomes involved with the LeGrasse family, helping Gabriella with her scuba diving training and teaching Francesca, Gabriella's younger sister, how to swim. As Jeff spends more time with the family, he forms a close bond with Alexandra, who is also dealing with her own grief. The story explores themes of loss, healing, and the power of human connection.

Throughout the narrative, Jeff and the LeGrasse family face various challenges, including an encounter with pirates who attempt to kidnap the women and steal the yacht. Jeff's quick thinking and bravery help save the family, and he becomes a hero in their eyes. The story concludes with Jeff contemplating his future and the possibility of finding new happiness with Alexandra and her family.
