Until one autumn day, when Max the Terrible, a terrier who's used up all his chances, lands on her doorstep. To make matters worse, she learns her ex-best friend has returned home and wants to make up. Hobbled by PTSD anxiety, her brother's best friend, on whom she's had a crush forever, resists her offer of a service dog. And her landlord has just announced he won't renew her lease.

Now Lark has less than a month to find a new place for her center, run the annual dog Adopt-a-Thon at the Pumpkin Festival...and find Max a new home.

As Lark juggles her obligations, she struggles with her inability to rescue everything and everyone. But when everything she's built finally falls apart, she discovers that telling the truth opens her life to new relationships in ways she'd never imagined.
