Alexis Levitin's translation of the Afro-Brazilian poet Salgado Maranh o's Blood of the Sun succeeds in negotiating the quirky experimental richness of Maranh o's Pre-Columbian, Amazonian, and Yoruba influences with his traditional rhymed lyrics and jazz-like syncopations.
