ENGLAND 1936: The Blackshirts are marching and Londoners are on the streets resisting them. In the chaos, a terrified, golden-haired girl pulls street-thief Baby from certain death. But Blackshirts overpower them and seize the girl. Baby tracks the Blackshirts to the coast where she finds a railway carriage hidden in brambles, a gang of renegade girls and newly orphaned thirteen-year-old Ida, trying to protect her golden-haired little sister ...

Kids are in serious peril and Baby is determined to rescue them. But she can only do that if Ida Barnes would just get off her high horses and join the gang. But Ida hates thieves. She would rather eat stale bread and mouldy cheese for the rest of her life than break the law. In her fight for her sister, she is equally determined to go it alone.
