Thirteen-year-old Luke Shields and his neighborhood crew, The Quarks, have always stuck together-especially in their elementary school days when Quark Missions ranged from rescuing orphaned bunnies to exacting revenge on rich kids. But now in junior high, when a former Quark, Kevin Stickle, goes missing a week before Y2K, Luke tries to rally the crew for one last mission: find Kevin before his mom locks herself in her millennium bunker.

But The Quarks have better things to do. Mitch and Travis just want to play football with those jerks, the Buttwipe Bros. Sophie-capable of delivering the most arm-numbing jab ever-is focused on perfecting her makeup in preparation for New Year's Eve and their first real junior high party. Scottie, Sophie's brilliant but nonverbal autistic brother, is busy playing Tomb Raider, guiding Lara Croft toward the final Scion.

Driven by his anxiety and the impending doom of the year 2000, Luke sets out on a solo mission to find his friend. As his desperation to find Kevin leaves him clinging for dear life and the clock counts down closer and closer to midnight, he discovers the key to finding Kevin in the most unlikely place.
