Ten-year-old Evelina splits her time between Minnesota and the North Carolina Appalachian Mountains where her best friend Wiley lives. She is devastated when a hurricane hits North Carolina in the fall, and shocked when Wiley shows up on her doorstep in Minnesota after his house is completely destroyed from the storm. Evelina and Wiley are usually romping around the mountains, eating peaches, playing music by the river, going into town for milkshakes and playing with Wiley's dog Scruffy Bones, but now Wiley gets to experience Evelina's life in Minnesota.
