He transferred to the \u003ci\u003eUSS Vestal\u003c\/i\u003e in August 1942, and served on that ship until November 1943.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eHe was assigned to the \u003ci\u003eUSS Silverbell\u003c\/i\u003e, a net tender. Though an auxiliary vessel, the \u003ci\u003eSilverbell\u003c\/i\u003e saw four months of bombing and kamikaze attacks at Leyte Gulf. The small ship was also endangered by three typhoons. His tour of duty on the \u003ci\u003eSilverbell\u003c\/i\u003e lasted until January, 1946. He also served three months on the \u003ci\u003e USS Trego\u003c\/i\u003e.
