In Seventeenth century England, Queen Elizabeth had just died. England was totally Protestant for they had succeeded in breaking away from the Catholic Church. They established the Protestant Church and everyone was expected to attend this new church. Catholics that refused to attend the church were fined, their lands confiscated, and they were often arrested if caught holding Mass or participating in Catholic services. This situation created discord among the Catholics who refused to attend the new church. Instead, they defied the English government and harbored Catholic Priests and created houses with priest holes to hide them. It was the rich Catholic women with large estates that protected the priests so Catholicism could flourish. King James VI of Scotland was crowned as King James I of England and Ireland. He was a Protestant king determined to rid England of all Catholics.
Sir Raoul Rousseau, Stadtholder of the Netherlands arrives in England for King James' coronation. When he arrives on the docks at his hotel, he is met with the sound of gunshots coming from a ship in the harbor. He turns to see what has happened. Three pirates dragged a third pirate along the docks heading toward the Tower of London. The people scatter. The third pirate loses his hat and long blond tresses fall to his shoulders. Raoul immediately recognizes the captive. It is Angelique, a lovely murderess from his past.
